General philosophy

Research relies on both basic sciences and applications. My focus in basic science is to establish a methodology that help to understand a biological phenomenon, its mechanism and its ecological impacts on the surroundings. Biological phenomena include Host-Pathogen and Host-Symbiont interactions. Natural products, the end result of any metabolic reaction, strongly reflect normal, abnormal or adverse interactions within and around an organism. The discovery of effective natural products can be augmented either to be used as a pharmaceutical drug or reverse its effect in case of pathogenic interaction. Nowadays understanding such biological phenomena requires full study on both cell and molecule levels including gene, protein and metabolite. Tools required for this kind of research include

  • Bioinformatics to fish and compare genes and proteins critical in a biological system, their similarity, their evolution and predicted function.

  • Analytical chemistry for detection and manipulation of metabolite, its biosynthesis and accumulation process.

  • Molecular biology to detect and confirm an observation on the gene level

  • Biochemistry to confirm the function of a protein or pathway.

  • Microscopy to study the systematic relationship on the cell level.
